South Korean artist Gwon Osang is one of the few artists in a long time who have really shocked me at how creative and smart their art is. An idea so simple, yet so brilliant and the same time. These sculptures were made from hundreds of photographs of the original subjects from various viewpoints, overlayed onto life-sized mannequins to create an effect which is both realistic and surreal at the same time.
When I look at his sculptures advertising comes to mind, one can see that Osang is influenced by advertising. Osang's talent as a sculptor and photographer combine to make beautiful crafted figures. Even though Osang continuous insists that he is a sculptor, not a photographer. What's amazing to me about his art is just like photos his sculptures tell a story.
This concept of weaving photographs together is one that can grow into so many differnt areas, very excited and curious as to what he'll do next.
Gwon Osang: "For quite some time now I've wanted to create something that anybody could see and recognize as a sculpture. And I was very interested in doing something still-life. You commonly see still-life in paintings and photography. But in modern art, still-life is not a dominant form of art. I have sought to create the conventional sculpture, which is The Sculpture. Like a modern painter who works with oil paint, I thought I could go avant-garde with an academic material. "
